In no other area do leaders of an organisation have so much influence as in creating the organisation culture. Some leadership styles lead to a more controlling or anticipating culture. Other styles encourage external focus and a entrepreneurial or innovative culture. Research conducted at LTP demonstrates that the personality of leaders is often influential in creating organisation dynamics. A good insight into the personality of the (future) leader and the effect he or she has when interacting with team members in the department or the organisation is crucial. Competent managers can at the same time create negative dynamics which results in a passive organisation culture. It is also interesting that an overly competitive chairman of the board, who actually wants to ‘win’ in every discussion, leads to a passive organisation culture and a lot of internal politics. The whole organisation ends up being less competitive, the chairman gets irritated whilst he actually reinforces it. Identifying these dynamics and investing in leadership, both in terms of leadership development as in terms of selecting the right man or woman for the position, can mean energy and vigour for many organisations. |
